We’re Nova Studios, an independent full-service film production company that turns real-world stories about people, places, projects and products into films that educate, inspire and excite. From 30-second promos for Sky Adsmart to documentary-style case studies, our experienced and diverse in-house crew plans, directs, shoots, edits and grades every frame – creating video with clarity and impact. Leading organisations in education, telecoms, heritage, construction and the arts trust us to handle every step of the process. Why? Because we know how to work sensitively and instinctively with people to uncover stories and share them with a wider audience. Whether you need a video production partner in Yorkshire, support on a nationwide campaign, or a team that will work with you through every step of the process, we make films you’ll love on time and on budget. Want to discuss your next project? Get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.

The truth is it can cost nothing on your phone or it can cost as much as the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on Hollywood productions.
At Nova Studios Ltd most of the films we produce cost between £2,000 and £25,000 – with the greatest volume of shortform documentary-style case studies and promos between £2,000 and £5000. It all depends on where we have to go, how much footage we have to shoot, how difficult it is to shoot that footage, and how long it will take us to edit that footage.
Videography is capturing moving images using a video camera, video production is making the whole film.
Videography in its simplest form is the act of putting a camera in front of a thing and pushing record. Any monkey with a camera can do that – whether they can tell a story with a camera… well you need clever monkeys for that – and we’ve got those at Nova.
As for video production – the process of making a complete video film – a number of skills and processes are utilised. At Nova these include planning, scripting, interviewing, cinematography, editing, graphics, music direction, audio mixing, colour grading, and more.
Yes and no. We’re definitely video producers and we’re film-makers too. You might think of video production as being more of a trade and film-making being more of a craft.
Video producers might make events videos and corporate videos, but film-makers might make documentaries, feature films or art films.
At Nova we fit both descriptions – we strive to be creative where that’s appropriate to the content; we make great films for all kinds of businesses and organisations; we are also commissioned to produce feature length documentaries and creative shortform films. We’re video producers and film-makers, we’re proud of our trade and we value our craft.
Independent film-makers are financially independent of any bigger organisation or system and they make films in which the content is not wholly steered by commercial concerns.
Nova Studios Ltd is an independent film-maker – but only some of the time. Whilst we are independent in the sense that we are financially independent and we do create a certain amount of content over which we have complete editorial control, we are also contracted by many much bigger organisations and we are more than happy for them to have the editorial say-so when it comes to the work we produce for them.
This depends on who you work with.
At Nova Studios Ltd, if we are working for a client then we say that the client owns the footage we shoot for them.
If that’s you, then it’s yours – and you can have it whenever you want it. You don’t have to license it from us, you can use it however and whenever you like and after you’ve paid us to shoot it, you don’t ever have to pay us to use that footage again.
No.
When you work with Nova we listen to your brief, make suggestions for improvements or development, and when we’re all agreed on the film we’ll be making, we send over a quote to complete the project. The only time this price would increase is if you ask us to do more work. In fact, if the project takes less time than anticipated then we’ll tell you and reduce the cost.
All of our staff are full-time, we own all of the gear we use, there are no equipment hire charges. Planning, shooting, edit and post-production, music licences, data management, VAT – everything – it’s all on the quote.
It just depends on what you want us to do and when you need it. We can turn them round pretty fast, and we’ve never missed a deadline.
We appreciate as long a lead-time on a project as possible, but we regularly have to respond quickly for our clients. A typical 2-3 minute online case-study or event documentary film with two or three interviews and a handful of vox pops can be shot in an afternoon and completed at our offices in another two days. A bigger documentary project or a more elaborate promotional film can take weeks.
