Nova & Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City creative digital skills programme – Painting group call out
Nova Studios and Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City are looking for Hull’s brightest young artists to be part of the next phase of a project telling our city’s story.
We’re offering an opportunity for four participants, age between 16 and 25 and living in Hull, to enhance their portfolios and hone their creative skills as part of the project’s painting cohort.
The group will be one of five cohorts working on the project and will create backgrounds which will later be used in an animation charting Hull’s evolution as a city.
Led by artist Annie Luke Turner, the workshops will take place over three Saturdays in the new year – January 22 , January 29 and February 5 .
How to apply
You don’t need a qualification – all you need to do is show us that you’re up for the challenge – we want to hear your ideas or see your work.
If you fancy it, then tell us why you want to be involved and a bit about you.
Either write us something short (no more than 500 words) or, if you prefer, record a couple of minutes of audio, explaining why you’d be right for this programme and send it to email@example.com with the subject line “Maritime City Application”.
Feel free to email us or drop us a message on social media if you need any help or more info.
Deadline: Tuesday, January 4th, 2022
Nova Studios & Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City creative digital skills programme – An Overview
The overall project will work towards the completion of short films telling an interpretation of Hull’s growth, development and existence as a Maritime City.
The work will take place in 5 groups of 4 people working in the following areas of creative practice: illustration, paint, film, music and writing.
Creative teams in each group will consist of young people and experienced practitioners working together in an exchange of ideas, skills and knowledge.
Participants will learn digital skills while making a genuine contribution to an ambitious creative work which will play a role in promoting Hull’s Maritime City status, with final films will exhibited in the city’s Maritime museum.
*Please note we are currently only accepting applicants for the painting group.
Who will make it?
The groups will be made up of talented and motivated creative young people with original ideas, assisted by some of the city’s leading artists, writers, musicians and film-makers.
Working collaboratively, the writers will create the stories which will be brought to life by the filmmakers. The artists and illustrators will create visuals with the musicians producing soundscapes.
The project is run by Hull’s leading film production company Nova Studios Ltd in collaboration with the Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City team and workshops will feature Nova Studios crew, Stew Baxter of the band ‘Life’, illustrator Alice Beasley, artist Annie Luke Turner and writer Russ Litten.
The work we’re doing will take place in a safe, friendly, accessible environment and we positively welcome applications from anyone who doesn’t always feel that they’re part of the crowd – we’re not looking for sheep.
This creative programme is part of the £30.3m Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Elements involve the refurbishment of the Hull Maritime Museum, restoration of the Spurn Lightship and the Arctic Corsair and regenerating the North End Shipyard, a hidden gem along the River Hull.
