Celebrating 120 years of Hull City with The Senior Tigers supporters group

At Nova we love to having the chance to help tell the stories of Hull’s social history so we were delighted when KCOM asked us to work with a Hull City supporters group to create a series of films to mark 120 years of the football club.

Made up of city fans over the age of 55, the Senior Tigers get together every few weeks to reminisce and discuss all things Hull City. Between them they’ve seen everything from the first ever game at Boothferry Park to the glory days of Chillo and Waggy, financial collapse in the 1990s and the glamour of the Premier League and cup finals in recent decades. As Tigers mad Peter Lincoln put it, “It doesn’t matter whether they’re at home or away, you follow Hull City. You don’t stop going because they’ve lost, you just keep going to the next game.”

Deano, Raich Carter, team buses and matchday programmes

But what is it that keeps them coming back? In November 2023, Nova sat down with ten members of the group to speak about their fondest personal memories of watching their team. There were lots of mentions of Deano’s goal and Raich Carter’s genius, one couple told us about their journey back from Chester City on the team bus, we heard about the time Leeds fans stood in a London away end to support City and one man’s matchday programme collection which stretches back to the 1950s.

Football fandom goes far beyond the action on the pitch – it engenders belonging, sparks adventure and punctuates the lives it inhabits. It was a pleasure to work with the members of the Senior Tigers supporters group and document their love for Hull City Association Football Club and hopefully these films extract a small part of what makes football fandom so important to so many.

“Proud to have been part of its success”

Tony Conway, Chairman of the Senior Tigers said: “Nova Studios were commissioned by KCOM to make a series of films for the Senior Tigers Club.

“The films included interviewing members, a prospect they (the Senior Tiger’s members) found daunting. However the film crew of Barney, Callum and Lydia were so professionally aware of this that they made it so easy for the members.

“Great planning, consultation at each point, great choice of locations and easy going manner enabled the filming to be a joy for all involved. The Senior Tigers were so pleased with very professional end result and those involved were proud to have been part of its success.”
